Re: Niagara Region chair gunning for Queen’s Park funding to cover new police requirements, Dec. 19.
The solution Niagara Region Chair Jim Bradley wants is the province borrowing more money to spend on Niagara’s policing budget so property taxpayers don’t have to pay more taxes.
Thank goodness Niagara Region has to balance its budget with tax increases. People can see the cost of compassion. The cost of compassion is more spending, on policing, on homeless shelters, health care, social services, safe injection sites and public safety. The Region has to be real about the costs and must include it in its budget.
The province and federal governments can borrow more without facing the cost. They don’t see the need to face the cost of compassion, they just borrow and pass it on to the next government and next generation. Municipalities can’t do that.
Compassion is needed and it is costly.
